Ceremony at South Padre Island

My fiancee and I are getting married at the Chapel by the Sea at South Padre Island. Unfortunately, the this site and this site don’t really tell me anything about what is allowed, what is, the music requirements, etc for weddings.

The only really helpful picture available was this:

What I can gather is 11 rows of pews and a lot of natural lighting. I’m thinking because the lighting should be ideal at 4:30, I’ll keep the overhead lighting off and drape tulle across the aisle, hanging from the globle lights. I hope they let me! I’m also going to get rid of the palm trees that flank the alter.

I’m going to have my mother in law make the aisle runner in white/cream and get the head of the aisle runner monogrammed with our initials.

The Chapel by the Sea doesn’t allow to hang or affix things to the pew sides. Below is what ideally the aisle would look like:

Simple enough, right? Lots of tulle, flashlights or lighting disks, and tall cylindrical vases that stand at about 2 feet. I’m going to rope off the aisle so only the bridal party and myself can walk up and down. I fear that we’ll loose the ‘classical and elegant’ elements because we’re having a destination wedding, so I’m trying to keep some things formal and relax other elements.

Now, all I need to find are 20-2ft tall cylindrical vases at a wholesale flower shop. Wish me luck!

Wedding Reception Send-Off

I found Wish Laterns from FourWindsWeddings.com and I love this idea as a send-off for the bride and groom after the reception. The laterns come with wish tags that our guests would write on and give to us as they make their wish for us.

This could be dangerous because…

combination of the beach breeze and catching fire (although the site I’m looking at says the rice paper is fireproof)
Said Beach Breeze changing directions from going into the sea, to crashing into a building, again.. causing fire.
Guests who have had a little too much to drink

This could be beautiful and fun because…

its romantic
gives guests something to do at the end (for closure?)
my future husband and i could keep the wishes our guests wrote out

Why?

I’m an Austin, Texas bride looking to get married on my hometown beach, South Padre Island. Hometown being a relative term, as I actually was raised about 45 min. from the beach, but my family and I spent many a weekend on what I commonly refer to as “my beach”.

I’m planning a semi-destination wedding in eight months. We were engaged on February 3, 2010 and will marry on October 9, 2010 (10/9/10).

I don’t expect anyone to read my blog, but I needed a place that I can store away all my ideas and links that I find as I conduct our wedding ceremony and reception research. I don’t like the idea of creating a binder that I’d carry around with me. At least if I store everything electronically, I can access if from anywhere and I don’t have a bulky binder to haul.

Lastly, if you are considering a South Padre Island wedding (and happen to find this brain dump-of-a-blog of mine), then – at the very least – you can use my tidbits of love as a point of reference of different vendors and supplies made available on and off the island. To no avail, I’ve searched and searched for decent wedding pictures, venues, ideas on the various Padre wedding planner websites. It’s all crap. I can’t tell if that means you can’t pull off a non-crappy wedding on South Padre Island, or if the little old ladies at SPI don’t know how to effectively run a wedding business. I don’t mean that in a mean way, but the types of weddings that I have seen pictures of are not, in the least, what I envision for the celebration of the marriage to the man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with.

I have a serious task at hand, and I’m hellified excited about it.

Wants: Elegance. White. Twinkle Lights. Sunset. Ocean. Seafood. Red Meat. Red Wine. Tall Glass Centerpieces. 200 of my nearest and dearest. 5-tier cake. Rectangular tables. White table cloths with Navy Organza overlay. Candles. Clear Skies. Stars. Sinatra.

Twinkle lights help light up a naturally dark space.

Not-wants: Sand. Tulle. Plastic anything. Flip-flops. Khaki shorts. Nautical anything.

That shouldn’t be too difficult, right?

Save the Dates: Mailing Labels

I want to have a formal wedding at the beach. I don’t want it to be stuffy, but it’s important to me that there is a certain level of ambiance and sophistication. Traditionally, the invitation will dictate how formal the wedding is, but I continue to read that brides will start a theme with the save the dates then continue that through the invitation.

That’s cool and all, but where’s the fun in that? My Save the Date magnets have a formal feel to them, but don’t match the colors we selected for the day of our wedding.

My question here lies with the mailing labels. I’m not going to bother with hand-addressing each one because my handwriting is awful and I’d rather print clear labels with some kind of decal on them next to the mailing address. The question is… which decal. I could have a lot of fun with this and make it less traditional and more edgy, or keep in like with an elegant feel and have more fun with the showers.

Options:

We’re not from New Orleans, and we won’t have a chandelier at our wedding. I need to get these things out.
